Dear, Charlie, I know you
Won't see things my way
But maybe with distance
You'll hold on to better days
I won't ask your forgiveness
I just want you know

Oh, Charlie
I love you
That's why I must go
'Cos there's a darkness inside me
That you should never know

Dear, Charlie, I can't be
The man you need me to be
I will only destroy you
Trying to find a release
I won't ask for forgiveness
I just want you to know

Dear, Charlie, please know that
I want with all my heart
To see you grow older
And always take your part
I won't ask your forgiveness
I just want you to know

About Dear Charlie

I installed an app for iphone that scans police and other public radio frequencies. I thought it might be a good source file for tapegerm collaboration. So this song started with a scanner conversation I happened upon. I'm not sure what they're talking about, but I was really only looking for the effect as a kind of background bed. I dropped it into track one and then started playing guitar over it. I wanted a loose feel, no click track to lock in the time. Then as I'm playing, I hear one of the people say, "Dear Charlie," and I immediately know that's the title. I had been thinking about a friend of mine whose husband committed suicide, leaving her behind with three children. At the funeral the, the children seemed to be gathering strength from each other and I couldn't help but be struck at the loss the youngest, the boy, must have been struggling to understand. I wrote the song from the perspective of the father somehow trying to convey his love for his son whom he was leaving behind.

I encourage artists to cover my songs, obviously. Please let me know if you do. I'd like to add your recording to this list and provide a link where fans can add it to their collection. Thank you!

Bryan Baker: guitar, source recording, synthesizer, eBow, vocal

The original recording began with the police scanner source and also provided me the song title. I had been playing around wiht the simple chord progression and wanted this to have a loose, open feel in the phrasing. I played it straight through, added the vocal which is processed through software called The Mouth, which I was using prominently while recording the Elementary Penguins album as an exercise attempt to create an album of songs during the month of February 2011. The solo is done with an eBow on my Burns Steer electric guitar.

Please feel free to share this song on Twitter. Or you can share it on Facebook too.
